Marathon County to consider metallic mining policy in wake of new state law


WAUSAU - Marathon County officials are considering a policy that aims to guard against the potential harm of copper and gold mining.

The proposal is a response to legislation, signed by Gov. Scott Walker in December, that paves the way for metallic mining in Wisconsin. The bill repealed a law that required companies seeking a non-iron mining permit to show regulators another U.S. or Canadian mine that`s operated for at least 10 years and has been closed for at least 10 years without polluting...

Ken Notes: The state will quickly act to limit restrictions applied by local units of government, I would instead focus on special impact fees, transit and noise ordinances, sewer and water regulations, and a required fund for site reclamation. Mines will tent to seek the path of least resistance and there are a number of roadblocks a community can establish without state interference...
