MARINETTE — Opposition to the Back Forty mine project grew by one municipality on Wednesday evening. The
City of Marinette formally passed a resolution during a special meeting
on Wednesday opposing a plan from Aquila Resources to open an 83-acre
mine in Lake Township, Menominee County, north of the Shakey Lakes
system and just about 50 yards from the eastern side of the Menominee
River. In addition to the resolution in opposition to the mine, the City
Council also passed a resolution urging Wisconsin legislators "to enact
legislation which would allow the adjacent Wisconsin State government,
Wisconsin county governments and local Wisconsin municipalities and
towns to have input on the regulation, permitting, operation and
reclamation of sulfide mining operations which pertain to sulfide mining
operations on Michigan/Wisconsin boundary waters." ... | ||
